|Sat 07 Aug 2005 - some Pedal Ubin Guides rode through some pre-Chek Jawa routes last tackled during 2001's Journey to the East. The trails were long abandoned, just like the old farms there. |
Guides ploughed through overgrown vegetation, narrow bunds peppered with the soft mud of new mud lobster mounds, and passed their bikes over a deep mangrove stream, hopping over separately to merry up and struggle through more vegetation.
Legs bore marks of their endeavour but it was a cheerful lot that finally made it Chek Jawa after first examining another mangrove streamlet.
Some of my old routes were fenced off but there are a few more that bear further investigation.
The abandoned farm pictured here is hemmed in by granite cliffs lined by rambutan trees blazing with red, ripe fruits.
Fun lot, the guides.
