A rain-soaked 95km

Category : cycling

Some of my riding kakis in Wheels Are Turning have been making practise runs on Saturday for the 300km Ride for Hope in May 2005. I finally joined them to develop sufficient fitness and route familiarity.

But Saturday was a wet, wet day and when I finally decided to bavee the storms, I printed out the route description and told them I'd see them in Changi Village, and hightailed it. Later I found out they started out from Planet Fitness Far East Plaza about the same time I did from Holland Village - about 9.20am.

The ride route is: Nicoll Highway, Mountbatten Rd, Amber Rd, Marine Parade Rd, Upper East Coast Rd - I caught up with them here as soneone changed jerseys at the petrol station. I had problems with the deraileur and Kevin, one of the East Riders, fixed that for me.

It had slowed down to a drizzle by then and was fairly clear at Upper Changi East Rd and nicely dry at Changi Coastal Rd - I just concentrated on keeping up as the company was very fast, a situation I keep finding myself in! My view alternated between the road ahead and the top tube, watching my sweat drip all over the bike frame!

We stopped for breakfast at Changi Village, had my bike looked at, got batteries for the camera and got a pair King's safety goggles for $6 that helped keep the spalsh and grime out the rest of the day.

Riding kakis at Changi Village, 2nd April 2005.

After waving goodbye to the East Riders, it was on to Loyang Ave, Pasir Ris, Old Tampines Rd, Hougang Ave 7, Upper Serangoon Rd, Sengkang West Ave, Jln Kayu, Seletar West Camp Rd (light drizzle became a heavy rain), Seletar Country Club Rd, Yishun Ave 6.

One of our riders was losing heat badly so we retired at some coffeeshop for a hot drink, and abandoned the last leg: Sembawang Road, Admiralty Road East, Riverside Road, Woodlands Ave 5, Kranji Road, Neo Tiew Road, Lim Chu Kang Road, Jalan Bahar, Jalan Boon Lay, Jurong East Central, Commonwealth Ave West, Clementi Road, Pasir Panjang Road, Telok Blangah Road, Keppel Road, the Esplanade.

We still some distance to cover to reach home and along the way, a friend's pedal droped off! We fixed that temporarily and eventually I clocked at least 95km instead of the intended 120km. Just as well, for this is manageable now. Next week perhaps!

Riding in the rain was lovely; I've always liked it. But cleaning, drying and oiling the bicycle took an hour afterward, groan!
