10th Runway Cycling 2005

Category : cycling

We went for the 10th Runway Cycling, an event which lets us tear down the runway every year. It's the 9th year Zendogs have been going after we saw someone wearing a t-shirt in 1996. We usually use the opportunity to sprint at speeds we never usually achieve, by following faster riders until we feel like blacking out. Yeah, that's actually a lot of fun!

We did our duty at the start, waved at the helicopter taking photos of us cyclists who had been shepherded into a number "10." For a bunch of civillians, we were extreemely cooperative since the AirForce & SAF have extended us the wonderful opportunity of racing down a wonderful tarmac for 10 years now. It is a pretty massive undertaking with security, ushers, traffic control, first aid, etc. to handle. And I am sure, more than a little area-cleaning. Thanks a lot for for the opportunity, guys!

The weather was cooperative, unlike last year which was so blazing hot, we all took shelter once the ride was over, sneaking out only for drinks and some makan. This time the skies provided a short downpour which cooled the area for the rest of the morning. It was so pleasant, two rainbows celebrated the event, and we lost track of time!

This year I ran rabbit for William Tan who was there to get a taste of the runway and we did two rounds, with Cyclists of the East (COTE) forming a protective cage around him. The first circuit had all the public riders darting about and so was loads of fun.

When we rode the second circuit, most cyclists had abandoned the runway after the proscribed 15km. You see, the carnival atmosphere and the food at the end is just too much to resist!

Athena the Han made up for this by trying to fly off the humps on the side road. She has previously flown in the air in Bukit Timah so we watched with much anticipation. No bones broken this time, but I nearly crashed trying to capture the moment. Pity the camera response is very slow becausse she had liftoff!

We did join the carnival and once again readily sank our teeth into some $8-Pizza (half price), a brand we never hear of until Runway and is then oh! so appetising. Gatorade aplenty since it was a work out after all.

Always pity the SAF Music 7 Drama company who sing an dance their hearts out to a rather passive or mesmerised audience. Safe Cycling Task Force was there and Ling the Merciless was manning the booth.

Later the Zendogs retired to Houngang Ave 2 for the real reason we go each year - hanging out at a coffee shop under the shade of an old rain tree.

All in all: Dst 72.14km, Tms: 4:00:49, Avs 18.0km/h, Mxs 46.5km/h. Photos.
