Half-Round Island ride

Category : cycling

Three of us intended to clock a 80km ride in preparation for NTU Sport Club's Round Island Cycling next Sunday. Instead, the 7am start outside Holland Village's Burger King saw 16 riders head off to Changi this morning, and one more joining us along the way! With Hari Raya Haji giving us a public holiday tomorrow, I suppose it was a good time for most.

The first leg to Serangoon Gardens was an hour's sprint and cramps claimed one victim. But by 9.45am, amazingly, we already tucking in to fried curry puffs in Changi Village! And by 2pm soon after after a stop at Lau Pa Sat, it was over. We are all riding slightly faster now and taking shorter meal breaks. Two of the girls on new bikes (one a racer) were significantly faster and enjoyed a less tiring ride.

At the end, the cooperatively cloudy sky suddenly revealed a burning sun and rain showered down just after we finished. We can only hope for such weather next Sunday.

2002's Project C.A.R.E round island ride was blazing hot and saw many caving in with cramps, especially after the halfway mark. Last year's NTU Round Island experienced a short washout near the end with lightning forcing us into shelter - fortunately I ended at a prata shop on West Coast. I was riding solo without my friends then, but this year, it appears I will have company...
