Weekend cycling - slowly but surely

Category : cycling

I might be riding support again for William Tan's fund-raising ride as part of "Reach Out and Run for the Elderly". This means I must be able to clock 100km effortlessly, as we will essentially be outriders.

So I decided to check myself out this weekend, and clocked 50 mins on an urban ride on Saturday and 3.5 hours of road on Sunday morning. My water needs were reasonable, about 600ml/20km. I did not require isotonics, and took only two 7 minute breaks to stretch and drink (with an eye on the watch).

However, I did breathe through my mouth at the later stages, and clocked relatively slow times. At Changi Coastal Road, I was averaging 23.4km/h and somehow couldn't nudge myself past 30km/h, which I had done during the NTU Round Island Rides.

Also could not find that extra kick when I reached World Trace Cente and struggled up Kent Ridge around 15km/h. As a result, my trip average speed dropped to below 22km/h, sigh! Just Friday, when I was returning to NUS from Labrador, I managed 19km/h, albeit with the help of a friendly cyclist who kept me in conversation

I have two weeks to manage 100km easily in a day. I need to recover the ability to execute quick accelerations at junctions without popping my knees. But slowly does it, if I ride everyday. I have not ached very badly since getting back in the saddle, so this is the right pace of recovery. I remain optimistic!
