NUS VPN solved?

Category : mac and the internet

In "NUS VPN settings", I explained that procedure using settings for a student connection. I admit I was unable to connect to the staff server, and since I had an alternative, I forgo pursuing a solution after one call to comcen.

Setting up my MacBook Pro these couple of days, I re-visted the issue. I tried the NUS Comcen webpage suggestion of the VPN client but no joy. Unsure if this was a Rosetta or Intel issue, I decided once again to try Tiger's in-built VPN instead. I referenced my old VPN page on the issue but once again failed to connnect with the staff server.

Just as I wondered about this, Alfred emails me. He is a mac-using former student who once went crab catching with me. Now staff of NUS, he announced he is able to connect via VPN off campus with his new staff account! However, he was using this server address:

I tried, but still no joy. Finally just now, I discovered the offending element - the encryption of password option in Tiger's VPN configuration window. It was selected by default. I set that to "none" and I was in!

Since the server address is different from what I originally used a year or two ago, I am assuming that if I try from inside, I must use

We'll see.

Meanwhile, I've been kicked off VPN twice in the last hour. I reconnected but what's that about?
