All is well with my MacBook Pro but a friend of a friend asked about a problematic Macbook. He reinstalled the Mac OS X (I am assuming 10.4.7, the latest) twice but no joy. The Applecare hotline was unable to help (actually he should persist) but he asked.
So off the top of my head, I suggested a few things and some me@ners chipped in as well; here are the notes below; I'll incorporate further suggestions and URLs.
Work around - Try using the Camino or Firefox browsers to see if problem is avoided. If so it might be the Java script.
Safari menu > Empty Cache
Safari menu> Preferences> "Security" tab> "Show cookies"> Delete all cookies.
In Finder, Go to ~/Library/Preferences, delete file "com.apple.Safari.plist"
Safari menu> "Reset Safari"(this will delete your browser history, cache, cookies, and other stored data).
Is 10.4.7 the problem? Lots of complaints about this. Try downgrading to 10.4.6; but use thee combo update and follow these steps. And make sure you do not install any 3rd party hacks, applications or utilities yet before you retest.
Is RAM the problem? - Did you add third-party RAM? If yes, then remove and see how.
The Me@n list suggested trying Memtest or those who need a GUI, Rember - it takes awhile so be patient.
Could it be insufficient RAM - check Activity Monitor for profile of RAM hoggeers.
Hardware? - There is some talk about hanging and even shutting down in Macbooks. Your Applecare warranty means they will ultimately solve the problem on the phone helpline or else issue you a case number. In such a case you will not suffer a penalty if the Apple Service Centre ultimately traces a software problem.
For some reason my copy of Cocktail refuses to allow me to login, so I hunted for and found this free maintenance app - Main Menu
For regular maintenance, see "Prevent Mac Disasters." By Rob Griffiths. Macworld, 24 Jan 2005. Of course some people I know have lived a charmed life, never running any of these steps, ever, yet have a fuss free experience! While you're at it, see also how to Protect your mac I'm a print subscriber of MacWorld hence the ready citations.
If you know of a similar list for Windows, please send the URL. I have dozens more pc-using friends who stare at hourglasses and I don't know where to begin...
Okay Kenneth, I'll dump this into my webpage and stop messing up your feed.
