Change Blogger's RSS autodiscovery link to Feedburner

Category : mac and the internet

I've been using Feedburner since 2004 to replace the RSS feeds in my blogs for several reasons - email subscriptions, more readable feeds, widget placement, a consistent feed URL that doesn't change with blog relocations, etc. See their reasons.

With Firefox and other browsers able to pick up feeds automatically, the autodiscovery code in blogs should be changed from the default else the wrong feed will be picked up.

Feedburner forums has the instructions for both old and new blogger temnplates. It seems straightforward andd I tried it out with the Raffles Museum Toddycats blog. Now ehen I type "feed:," NetNewsWire (my default RSS reader) picks up the Feedburner URL instead of Blogger's default.

Here are the steps for my future reference; I have quite a number of blogs to change!

  1. View the HTML source code of your blog (right-click on the page and choose "View Source")
  2. In the source code display window, select and copy a block of code (near the top) similar to this:
  3. In the Blogger Dashboard, choose Template > Edit HTML
  4. Locate the following line near the top:

    (it can appear slightly different)

  5. Replace the line with the code copied earlier from the blog's source code.
  6. Remove the lines that refer to Blogger's default feeds:
  7. Insert instead:

    - in my case, it was
  8. Save Template.

With Google's acquisition of Feedburner, integration with Blogger (also owned by Google now) should become sweeter. Still this is useable and I'll see how Ruo Yu manages this for her internship blog.
