Two newsletters I manage through yahoogroups have had virus-infected emails sent to the list - purporting to originate from the moderators. They were bogus of course but could get through yahoogroups and out to subscribers because the filter was fooled.
When I changed the mailing list settings to require that I approve every message, a whole bunch of virus-laden emails were trapped in the "pending email folder". They could not get through unless I approved the message.
Interesting thing is, none of these emails activated an approval request to the moderator, which a normal mail would. So there is a way to differentiate between a bogus and fake email attacking these lists.
I hope Yahoogroups can use this to implement a filter (I will email them although I am sure many others have). Approving each message only works for low traffic lists.
Yahoogroups seems to be struggling to cope since the 2003 trojans emerged. Let's see...
