Crab catching and seminars

Category : mangroves

Caught, measured and released another 90+ tree-climbing crabs (Episesarma) with ladybug's help. This time round, the 4th of the May samplings, it was spring tide, so it was relatively easy to catch the tree-climbing crabs.

Dropped a levelling screw and had to dive in the water to try to retrieve it. Despite running my fingers gingerly over the soft muddy bottom, I failed to locate it and abandoned the search when I figured I could salvage a replacement from old equipment or buy a new one from a DIY store.

It was time to rush back to host a seminar at the department - all the support staff was away at a retreat and I had to open the conference room door! Luckily the other organiser found some other staff member handy and got it opened.

The speaker, Sabrina Russo, talked about the role of soils in her tropical rainforest plot at Lambir Hills National Park. She kept it only mildly techincal except for some logarithmic equations, and it was interesting work that had me thinking, despite being quite exhausted.

We have been lucky to have had several rainforest ecologists give seminars at NUS. They had come through for the significant Bukit Timah book launch which the entire biodiversity commmunity was invited to.

Next through are fish systematists down for Aquarama and then a coral reef biologist coming here specifically in June for a public talk.
