Crabbing yesterday

Category : mangroves

Caught, measured and released 143 tree-climbing crabs (Episesarma spp.). Photo courtesy of Dinesh who strapped a water-resistant camera on his hat and grabbed a bunch of shots.

Since the high tide peaked at 4pm and held steady for two hours, Ladybug, DInesh and I were able to catch at least 100 crabs by the first two hours. By the time I finished measuring and we returned the crabs back to the mangroves, it was at least 8pm.

The inordinately high number of mosquitoes due to the July rains had even me applying DEET. The mosquitoes buzzed around us as they emerged from freshwater-filled phytotelms all afternoon, and peaked at dusk. Then they were gone. Very Aedes aegypti of them.

Thankfully no dengue that far north.

The elastic band I found on a trolley on my first trip is an invaluable tool - we usually use it to hang the white platic buckets around our necks, and that night I used it to strap the torchlight to my hat.

The nervous security guard at Sungei Buloh was still mumbling to himself when we left, despite my best assurances that this was a nice clean forest that I used to wander about alone in the night, on many occasions over more than a decade.
