Crab sampling, 11 & 16 Nov 2005
Category : mangroves
11 Nov 2005 - with Ladybug, Wai and Casper. Ladybug is the champion crab hunter and with the tide so high, I could spend some time to grab a couple of shots of them in action.
We decided to tempt fate by transferring crabs into a common pail. I was to take them out earlier and get started with measurements first. But they were treading water (>2m depth) and I was hanging on to a branch above us with my legs.
In the confusion, one crab got away, and a pail and two nets were dropped. Ironically the nets were recovered by the weakest swimmer but the pail got away. I still can't believe we lost a huge pail! Oh well...
16 Nov 2005 - with Lekowala and Casper. Some NParks staff was having a divisional meeting at Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve, apparently something they have every month. I smsed CanopyBen and later a bunch of them came out to visit us at the Visitor Boardwalk, presumably during a tea break.
We talked about Episesarma for a bit before they had to return to their meeting, and we headed off to the second zone. Was nice talking to naturalists for once; usually its the rare members of the public on the boardwalk when we're working.
141 crabs caught, measured and released.
Lekowala calls this one "Digit". We recognise him from the damage to his finger.
