SAJC gets into the Kranji cleanup more frequently

Category : mangroves

SAJC's Green Club decided to take up the challenge of tackling Kranji mangroves more than just once a year, as the problem at Kranji is quite bad. The group is led by ICCS veterans from Kranji mangroves, and received some training the previous year. So I am comfortable.

The students and teacher met Linda from Sungei Buloh and myself at Raffles Museum, just last week, Wed 3 Mar 2004. I received a phone call yesterday from the students - some 20-30 of them want to begin on Monday, a very quick response indeed.

SAJC looks fit to continue a tradition in the mangrove cleanup that began in 1999, after I bumped into my old biology teacher, Mrs Chew, at some symposium in NUS! I began training SAJC students then to handle the cleanup and two off that first batch are still involved today - Fiona in Life Sciences brings in a wet ops team from Sheares Hall and Hua Qin in Envt Engrg also helps to lead an NUS delegation.

So some SAJC students get muddy annually, courtesy of SAJC's Green ever since. In 2001 they were the first group ever to run their own site without supervision . In 2003 seniors helped pass on their ops knowledge to juniors. Now, they plan to conduct it more frequently. Not bad, eh?
