1956 antidote to Oliver Stone's Alexander

Category : movies

After Oliver Stone's Alexander, I raced home to pop in the VCD of Robert Rosen's Alexander the Great (1956).

It served as antidote.

I may, of course, been influenced by Mary Renault's trilogy - three novels which depict him as a true hero!

While I found the battle scenes interesting, Stone's Alexander is almost as bad as Besson's Joan of Arc. Bucephalus looked though.

The narrator is supposed to be Ptolemy Soter, one of Alexander's general who became the governor of Egypt. It was Ptolemy who managed to secure Alexander's body which he brought to Alexandria. Ptolemy established Alexandria as his capital and would initiate the "Pharos LighthouseČ ("Lighthouse at Alexandria"). It was considered one of the wonders of the ancient world and stood from 270 B.C. before succumbing to earthquakes in 1303-1326.
